Along with measuring people’s standing time, the authors also measured the participants’ health, well-being and productivity. For example, they looked at whether people lost weight, slept better, were more productive at work, felt pain, and so on. The study found no significant differences between those who participated in the standing intervention and had adjustable desk with drawers, and those who did not.
This study found that standing has a large benefit in preventing sedentary behavior, but no significant benefit in key health issues or other outcomes that we really care about.
This is a big deal because like I said, standing only matters if it improves other things. If standing doesn’t reduce pain, aid weight loss, or have other benefits, then why are we spending money on standing desks, just to slightly alter the way employees work?
In the research on standing gameing desk, its relationship with health is rarely mentioned. The studies were all fairly similar, with small samples, and mostly aimed at proving that standing desks made people stand more, with little research on their health or productivity effects. Even trials that look specifically at health outcomes tend to have small samples to detect real effects. Some studies have found health benefits, some have not, but all of these are insufficient to determine whether standing actually improves health.
